How to Be a Perfect Flatmate
Posted on December 2nd, 2014
When it comes to sharing your digs with other students, there is a certain art to being considered the perfect flatmate – after all, who wants to be the annoying one that everyone avoids in the corridor!
Keeping your fellow flatmates happy, whether you are in university halls or privately rented student accommodation, can make all the difference between being a great flatmate and a not so great one. Here we offer the dos and don’ts behind harmonious student living…
Do pay on time
Whilst sharing the burden of paying for a plush student pad in the heart of the city is just one of the bonuses of student accommodation, managing everyone’s contribution to monthly rent and bills can be a challenge. Whether you are sharing with just one friend or a selection of flatmates, managing money matters is always tricky, so make sure the amount payable per person and the date of payment is communicated clearly at the start of your tenancy and always pay your share on time.
Don’t be the house slob
Learning to live with another person or a group of people is difficult, however taking responsibility for your own mess is important. While leaving the odd dirty cup by the sink for washing isn’t a grave crime, leaving a whole week’s worth of dishes for your fellow flatmates to clean is! Make sure you clean up after yourself and maintain great relationships every step of the way.
Do respect your neighbours
As well as maintaining great relationships with your flatmates, make an effort to be a good neighbour also. Every student loves a party but your neighbours may not take kindly to celebrations going on until the early hours.
Don’t just sign
When finding and securing a property to rent in Newcastle, you and your flatmates will have to sign a tenancy agreement, however, it’s important to read all the information provided before you sign on the dotted line. Your letting agent will also be on hand to explain any parts of the agreement that are difficult to understand.
Do talk things through
Whilst it’s almost impossible to truly be a perfect flatmate, the key to being a success is communication. Making sure you talk things through should an issue arise is essential. Whether it’s a messy kitchen or late payer that grinds your gears, hold a house meeting to air and resolve your grievances quickly and effectively.
